The Sandbox’s Sebastien Borget cringes at the word ‘influencer’: X Hall of Flame

The Sandbox co-founder Seb Borget believes the next crypto gaming bull run will kick off once market participants see “sufficient profit” from crypto.

The Sandbox co-founder Sebastien Borget gets stopped for photos occasionally at crypto conferences and even has his own memecoin, but he’s not too keen on being labeled an influencer.

“I don’t consider myself a crypto influencer, and I try to keep a very humble and low profile at the end of the day,” Borget tells Hall of Flame.

That said, if you take a selfie with him and post it on X — or if you’re a landowner or have an avatar in The Sandbox — he’s happy to manually airdrop his memecoin, the SEBASTIEN BORGET Token (SEB).

While most memecoins have little value, SEB is a social token that is literally worthless.

“It still has zero value…because I’m not planning to list it, sell it and so on,” Borget says.

While Hollywood celebs cannot get enough of milking memecoins for cash, Borget’s is just about community engagement.

“If someone else is ready to pay money for it, I really don’t know what they would get from it, but, like, it’s really not meant with the purpose of monetizing,” he adds.

However, he often toys with the idea of using the token — now with over 50,000 holders — for charity or some kind of philanthropy in the future.

Borget credits most of his following to the rise of The Sandbox, a virtual world on Ethereum where users can create, own and sell their gaming experiences using SAND, the platform’s utility token.

How did Seb Borget build his X following?

Borget has 141,200 X followers and has been on the platform since June 2007 — before crypto was even a thing — but he’s never been one to chase clout.

“I’m really building it organically, you know, like I’m not chasing for attention,” Borget says.

Borget says his biggest follower spike came in 2021 and 2022, when The Sandbox was blowing up during a crypto gaming bull run, and Facebook’s rebrand to Meta had the media obsessed with the metaverse.

That triggered a domino effect, with normies following anyone and everyone seen as a leader in the space.

His follower count continues to grow as he stays active in The Sandbox community and with his social tokenholders — but doubts he’ll hit a million anytime soon.

“I believe my profile will rise a little bit in followers, but I’m very far from ‘a lot of’, like crypto leaders,” he says.

What content does Seb Borget produce?

Borget might not be a fan of the word “influencer,” but with his posts about The Sandbox, updates about global speaking gigs and nonstop Web3 advocacy, he’s quite influential.

Andy Warhol would have loved (or possibly hated) NFTs

“I’m posting pretty much only about The Sandbox, our community, and the content made by the creators and community,” Borget says.

There’s a mix of stuff, from educational posts to quick behind-the-scenes clips of his fast-paced life as a globe-trotting crypto gaming executive.

“The core of my following, I believe, is still like creators who are highly engaged with The Sandbox platform, who also want me to follow what they are doing.”

As for who he enjoys following, he’s mostly interested in content from projects he’s interested in and the people involved in them.

“I try to follow projects of my interest or the artist I collect digital art and NFTs from, so I progressively also built a network over social media into this vertical,” he says.

Predictions from Seb Borget?

Like many in the crypto community, Borget expects retail consumers to make a comeback in the crypto space but isn’t entirely certain when that will occur.

“At the moment, we’re still waiting to see a bit of the retail/consumer back into crypto,” Borget says.

“I believe this a lot, after the strong institutional money that’s being put in the crypto space,” he adds.

When it comes to the next crypto gaming bull run — which typically lags behind other crypto sectors — Borget says that after people have made “sufficient profit” from the next upswing run, some of that money will naturally flow into gaming — and that’s when the gaming bull run will really take off.
