Bitcoin User Treated by the Bank as a Criminal

One of the leading Swedish banks Swedbank has terminated the bank account of one of its clients because of a bitcoin deal she has recently performed. Sandra Bröms Hopkins has sold 5 bitcoins on an electronic marketplace. After the performing of the deal at the website LocalBitcoins.com and receiving the payment in fiat currency the bank became suspicious and has frozen the account belonging to her.

The action was completed on the 4th of October and Sandra has checked if the money has entered her account opened at the Swedbank. The deal was successful and she was not entering the account for several days. Some days after she noticed that she could not inter her Internet banking account and see anything considering her money deposited at the bank.

She waited some time for changes, but decided to contact the bank and its representative later on the 11 of October. The answer included a question from the bank. They asked her to give more details on the bitcoin deal she was involved in. She even received a call from a manager. The advice of the bank was not to make further any transactions with bitcoins and other crypto currencies. The main reason was the anonymity of this money transfers and questions of safety. Hopkins did not like this attitude of the banks as it was similar to an assault committing a terrible financial crime. She was not ready that such a harmless deed, with something really belonging to her might wake up such a resonance and attitude.

After 15 days starting from the day of transaction the account of Hopkins was launched and still works with all the provided features.

The representative of the Swedbank gave comment on this case. He insists that bitcoins are not illegal or prohibited in Sweden. Still every situation – payment, deal, transfer is monitored and is evaluated separately to determine its legal basics.

Swedbank is the leading Swedish bank offering a wide spectrum of financial support and service for its customers all over Europe. Especially it has gained a huge popularity in the Baltic and Scandinavian region. The financial institution is more interested in merging with other leading banks of Sweden and widening of their network as of working with bitcoin. Still the spokesperson has mentioned that the bank actively monitors the situation in the crypto currency community, especially considering their own customers.

Hopkins still things that there is no necessity to be that strict and rude to BTC users. Not many people belong to this community in Sweden. Sometimes she speaks to people about bitcoin, but a common reaction towards this information is that it has been heard, but the person does not use it. She failed to find someone else using bitcoin even not very regularly. She considers herself as almost the only person in her country to do so.

The same statistics can be obtained from the localBitcoins.com. There are good basics for the BTC popularity to grow, but it still happens very slowly.
