From hacks to apps, a report says more than 10 counterfeit Bitcoin-related apps found their way into Apple’s App Store with some of them being designed to steal Bitcoin worth thousands of dollars from users.

Though all the counterfeit apps have since been removed from the App Store, one user claimed to have lost about $10,000 with a trace to the deposit address showing it has $20,000 listed on it, according to Breadwallet co-founder Aaron Voisine in an interview.

Breadwallet case

Breadwallet was one of the first legitimate Bitcoin wallets to be identified as being counterfeited to unsuspecting customers.

Apps that publish their source code for the tech community to vet their software - like Breadwallet - are said to be vulnerable to this sort of attack, since anyone can copy the code to create their own version.

Some of the other apps that have been reportedly removed are GreenAddress, Simple Bitcoin Wallet, GreenBits Bitcoin Wallet, Bitcoin Wallet, Bitcoin Armory Wallet, Blockchain - Offline Bitcoin Wallet, and BitcoinCore - Bitcoin Wallet.

Doctor Web case

In a related case, Doctor Web warned users of iOS devices about two fake Dr.Web applications on Apple iTunes store. Both illegally use the Dr.Web's internationally registered trademark and logo while their respective developers are in no way connected with Doctor Web, Ltd. The applications in question are SYStem Monitor Dr.Web Light Pro and System Services Anti-virus Dr.Web Light. Dunkin assassin nguyen and BUI MAI are listed as their respective developers.

None of these products is present in the Dr.Web product line. Dr.Web Mobile Control Center and the utility Dr.Web CureNet! are the only available Dr.Web products for iOS.

Apple's technical support was notified about the incident on August 8, 2016, however, by 8PM MSK no response had been received.
