Serena Tabacchi is the director and co-founder of the Museum of Contemporary Digital Art (MoCDA). Tabacchi holds a bachelor of arts degree in performing arts from Link Campus University, obtained a Master of Arts in text and performance from Birbeck, University of London, and holds a degree in text and performance from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Shortly after her years in university, Tabacchi took a position as retail team manager at the Tate Modern Museum before moving into blockchain as an event coordinator at the Blockchain Game Alliance. Her interest in blockchain came about in 2018 while attending a conference called “Art and Blockchain.” She currently assists The Sandbox project in establishing partnerships alongside her BGA and MoCDA positions.
The Museum of Contemporary Digital Art is an entirely virtual museum primarily resulting from the ongoing pandemic. It is based in the Decentraland metaverse and spent 2021 hosting various art exhibits from creators of all types.
MoCDA officially opened in June 2021 with an exhibition called “Digital Embodiments and Interventions, the Sculptural World of Marjan Moghaddam.” This hour-long event allowed fans to experience the works of Moghaddam via digital curator Filippo Lorenzin. The works are now a permanent part of MoCDA.
Interestingly, despite 2021’s explosion of NFT discussion, the MoCDA didn’t take any NFTs into its collection that year. That said, Tabacchi noted the museum would soon make NFTs of certain artworks a part of its permanent collection, but that there is no intent to sell most of them.
Prior to its opening in 2021, the MoCDA worked with Arkane Market to release 100 digital prints of an exhibition poster, marking the first time MoCDA worked with blockchain technology.
As for The Sandbox, the project partnered with Snoop Dogg in September to facilitate his establishing a mansion and NFT collection within its metaverse. Snoop Dogg will host live concerts on this plot of land and will spend time interacting with other players as well.
MoCDA has already been holding new exhibits since the start of the year. Its most notable exhibition thus far was “Memento-Minti,” which featured artists like Jisu Choe, Sasha Stiles and Silvio Lorusso, with many more likely to come.
Tabacchi has also mentioned the possibilities of art on other blockchain networks alongside Ethereum, potentially hinting at MoCDA expansion in the future.
Likely due to Tabacchi’s work in its partnerships division, The Sandbox partnered with gaming tournament organizer LootMogul in January. This is likely a sign of things to come as The Sandbox is bound to harness that technology to hold various gaming tournaments as the year goes on. The project raised $93 million just before 2021’s end, and that money will surely establish more partnerships among other Sandbox developments.
Tabacchi’s attendance at the Blockchain Game Alliance isn’t going unnoticed, either. The project has experienced membership growth of 186% since 2020, bringing together invaluable new studios and protocols, among other blockchain-related gaming experts. One can expect this growth to continue as metaverse and similar gaming projects gain popularity throughout 2022.
