In March 2014, the media publication Newsweek identified Dorian Nakamoto as the creator of Bitcoin, citing similarities with Satoshi Nakamoto, including his libertarian views and Japanese heritage.

Newsweek published a photo of Nakamoto’s home, which violated his privacy, and Nakamoto denied involvement with Bitcoin. Tech entrepreneur Andreas Antonopoulos started a fundraiser to support him at the time, with over 2,100 supporters donating 102.23 Bitcoin (BTC) — valued at $34,500 in 2014 and roughly $6.8 million as of March 2024 — as compensation for the ordeal.
