Zamboglou announced on social media that he would leave his role at the head of Blockasset’s crypto sports betting network to launch a new venture, Oneiro Labs.
He posted on X: “I’ve left @Blockassetco with immediate effect and pursuing other opportunities. Would like to wish the guys best of luck, they are a great bunch of people who will no doubt succeed with their vision.. catch y’all soon!”
Zamboglou later went on to add more details about the new opportunities he will be pursuing. “Since joining the Web3 world, I have seen the huge opportunity and want to be able to realise my own ambitions and vision within this sector,” he said.
Formerly a senior member at WilliamHill and Entain, Zamboglou was hired from Evoke in October last year to lead the company’s expansion into the Web3 and crypto betting space.
Honesty in crypto sports betting
Launched in 2021, Blockasset started as an athlete NFT and tokenization platform. Last year, it launched BlockBet as its crypto sports betting platform and hired a series of high-profile names in the gambling industry to lead the project.
At the time of his hiring, Zamboglou stated, “One of the big things that we want to bring to crypto gambling is reputation, transparency and openness, and being really honest, we know that’s lacking in the industry at the moment.
“We want to be open and honest with our regulator, and we want to bring trust to a sector that desperately needs it.”
The company had plans to make BlockBet a leader in the GambleFi sector and build on its original vision of connecting fans to athletes and sports teams. A partnership with the UFC last June looked to establish a bigger platform for Blockasset. On the multi-year deal, a statement read,
“This new partnership will open up our world to millions of casual and hardcore fans, allowing everyone to get closer to the action with our suite of web3 products and experiences playing a critical role in this expansion.”
They have also partnered with other UFC athletes and collaborated with soccer star, Wayne Rooney, on their Legends NFT collection.
C-suite will join Zamboglou in exodus
CMO Michael Sheehan, and CPTO Michael Wallington, will join Zamboglou on his new venture along with others on Blockasset’s C-suite. Sheehan and Wallington were also hired just 6 months ago, so the departures could bring a period of big change at the company and impact their crypto sports betting project.
Blockasset have yet to officially confirm the news of the departures or who will replace Zamboglou, but rumors are that co-founder Paul Evans will step into the role, at least temporarily.
Evans was the former CEO and had been working as the chairman until now.
