Gov. Lombardo appointed Mike Dreitzer as the new head of the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) to replace current chairman Kirk Hendrick.
Dreitzer was serving as the CEO of Gaming Arts, a gaming equipment supplier and was previously Nevada’s Deputy Attorney General.
In a press release announcing the appointment, Lombardo commented, “I’m pleased to announce Mike Dreitzer as the incoming Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Mike has an extensive background in gaming compliance and brings decades of industry experience to the role.
“I’m confident that Mike will lead the Nevada Gaming Control Board with integrity and honor, while furthering its recent innovation and progress.”
Nevada Gaming Control Board’s tough task
Dreitzer will take over the challenge posed by prediction markets to Nevada’s regulated gambling market. The NGCB are in a legal fight with Kalshi over claims they conform to sports betting regulations.
On his appointment, Dreitzer said, “I’m deeply honored by this appointment to the Nevada Gaming Control Board, and I’m grateful to Governor Lombardo for his confidence in me.
“I look forward to furthering the essential mission of the Board, while supporting its agents and staff to ensure the highest quality gaming regulation for our state.”
As one of the traditional hubs of gambling in the US, the role also involves policing the state’s busy casinos for money laundering. The NGCB reached a settlement this week with MGM Resorts over money laundering violations.
California-based illegal bookmakers were using the Silver State’s casinos to gamble funds gained from unlicensed betting activity.
Smooth transition
Ougoing chairman Hendrick expects Dreitzer to carry on in much the same way. He said that, “Handing over the gavel to Chairman Mike Dreitzer will be a smooth transition.
“Mike and I have known each other for almost 30 years going back to our days in the Attorney General’s Office. Mike is the perfect choice by Governor Lombardo based on Mike’s long career in gaming law, government, regulatory compliance, and business.”
Dreitzer will continue the fights against prediction markets, anti-money laundering, and the rise of unregulated online casinos. State lawmakers have also been attempting to tackle unlicensed casinos and introduced a bill last month aiming to strengthen enforcement against illegal operators outside the state.
Dreitzer will take over in June and serve out the remaining 18 months of Hendrick’s tenure, up until January 2027. He will leave his position and provide transition services until taking up his new role.
Merkur Gaming, which is acquiring the interests of Gaming Arts, expects to appear before the Nevada Gaming Control Board next month.
