Silk Road was an online black market operating in the darknet. Users could access it via Tor, a highly encrypted anonymity network, and offer any kind of goods for sale, including items which are illegal in some jurisdictions, such as drugs or firearms. All transactions between the buyers and sellers were conducted via Bitcoin, thanks to the cryptocurrency's anonymous nature. After achieving a certain level of popularity, it has come under the attention of the FBI, which resulted in an investigation and the ultimate arrest of Silk Road's founder Ross Ulbricht, and the shutdown of the service itself.
