Axie Infinity

Axie Infinity is an online game universe that harnesses blockchain technology to make its components tradable. AXS is the main token of the Axie Infinity project, although the game also utilizes a token called Smooth Love Potion (SLP). 

The world of Axie Infinity

Made by game development company Sky Mavis, Axie Infinity is primarily a game composed of multiple elements inside a digital world, with nonfungible tokens (NFTs) playing key roles. Spanning 90,601 segments of Land, Axie Infinity’s digital world goes by the name Lunacia, with each Land segment tied to an NFT. 

The Axie Infinity world revolves around Axies — creatures with numerous attributes and variables that affect their battle performance. Axies can battle against other human-owned Axies, or against computer-run opponents. Each Axie is an NFT (ERC-721 standard), making them tradable. Battles utilize cards, with opponents taking turns for their moves.

Axies are also breedable. Breeding two Axies with each other requires use of the project’s AXS token, in addition to SLP tokens — a type of ERC-20 token that players can earn, or buy on certain crypto exchanges. The Axie Infinity game includes numerous variables when it comes to Axies, such as genetic traits passed down from parents (the two Axies that were bred to form the offspring). 

The Axie Infinity ecosystem is underpinned by the Ethereum blockchain as well as the Loom Network sidechain, depending on the ecosystem component. The project, however, aims for a future in which the game’s ecosystem components run on an Ethereum sidechain known as Ronin, built by Sky Mavis. 

AXS: the Axie Infinity token

AXS is the Axie Infinity project’s governance token (ERC-20 token standard). Sky Mavis started out owning a notable share — 21% — of the token’s supply (locked, but with a token unlocking schedule). The project’s plans include increasing decentralization of the ecosystem via multiple avenues. 

AXS, called Axie Infinity Shards, serves a number of roles in the Axie Infinity ecosystem. AXS also trades on numerous crypto exchanges.
