Multicoin Capital eyeing AI agents, institutional ‘frenzy’ in 2025

Multicoin Capital expects 2025 to be a “pivotal year” for Web3 as artificial intelligence flourishes and tokenization triggers a “frenzy of institutionalization,” the venture capital firm said in a Jan. 7 report.

The report, dubbed “Frontier Ideas for 2025,” anticipates the emergence of AI-run “zero-employee companies” and a “dizzying pace” of institutional adoption as security tokens finally “take off in a meaningful way.”

Meanwhile, investors will turn to AI agent “alpha hunters” to navigate the growth of new tokens and crypto-native financial products, the report said.

Institutional adoption

Analysts expect 2025 to be among crypto’s best years ever, propelled by President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in the US’ November elections and surging institutional inflows into Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

“With a pro-crypto administration coming into power in the US and the record-setting success of the BTC ETFs, we are about to see 5-years of institutional complacency scrambling to catch up and find ways to support crypto as quickly as possible,” Multicoin said.

In November, US BTC ETFs broke $100 billion in net assets for the first time, according to data from Bloomberg Intelligence.

Multicoin expects tokenized private credit and startup equity to flourish early, with public stock tokens taking off later. Meanwhile, virtually every incumbent financial institution will “race to offer basic financial products around crypto.”

“Blockchains ensure that all participants have access to a real-time, immutable record of transactions. This level of transparency and security is a stark contrast to the opaque and sometimes risky centralized databases of traditional finance,” Multicoin said.

Agentic AIs

In 2025, agentic AIs — machines pursuing complex goals autonomously — began reshaping the digital economy, building Web3 applications, launching tokens and interacting with humans autonomously.

Now, with the onset of “more advanced chain-of-thought reasoning models, [AI] models are getting to the point where they can think, plan, execute, and self-correct along the way,” Multicoin said.

“This provides the foundation for AI agents to perform all of the tasks in a business.”

Multicoin expects “the next iteration of AI agents to be Alpha Hunters — i.e., those whose sole job is to hunt alpha and trade it autonomously in real-time.”

Eventually, Multicoin predicts that “crypto capital markets will fund ambitious attempts at Zero-Employee Companies,” which could lead to “incredible breakthroughs across all business operations.”
